I'm building a pneumatic that I'm not putting pass 70 psi. I need 2 inch diameter pipe for my design, but I can't find any pressure rated PVC or ABS where I am (southern Ontario, Canada). Would DWV cell core ABS be adequate for my use?

I built a spray n' pray awhile back with 3 inch ABS DWV, and yes it did crack on me, but all I got was a mild burn on the belly as opposed to flying shrapnel in the eye, so I think I'll stick to the ABS. I saw off the cracked portion and rebuilt the thing, and it hadn't cracked on me again, so I'm thinking as long as I keep the chamber short, it'll hold. If anything, I'm planning to double wrap the chamber in 3/8" polypropylene cord (180 pound working strength) to reinforce it.

Or if anyone know where I can pick up some pressure rated piping, I'll appreciate it!

Well, I look through Rona's site and found something that MIGHT be usable:
http://www.rona.ca/en/pvc-pipe

Its rating is "PVC Series 200 CSA DR21", Series 200 I know means its for irrigation, DR21 might be a sizing standard, but nothing concrete on pressure rating. Its getting REAL frustrating trying to find stuff in this country :/.

Edit: You sure that place takes small order?

Q: What does the “DR” or “SDR” number on the pipe mean?

A: It is the ratio of pipe diameter to wall thickness. It is calculated by dividing the specified outside diameter of the pipe by the minimum specified wall thickness. Any size pipe with a common DR is qualified to operate at the same pressure regardless of pipe OD (e.g. 2” IPS DR 11 pipe can have the same operating pressure as 12” DR 11).
For 1 1/4 inch pipe, that's a wall thickness of around 1.5mm - not the sort of stuff you want to be trusting with pressure in my view.

Having said that, this place lists class 200 as having a working pressure of 200 psi: http://www.all-about-pipe.com/pvc-pipe- ... l#class200

I need a 2 inch pipe, hopefully they carry it. I rather have some pressure-rated ABS, but that's hard enough to find. You think my cord wrap idea would stop the PVC from sharding on me if it does blow?

I don't think 1.5 mm is too bad for a small diameter pipe like a 1-1/4", seeing how there's less surface area for the air to push against. That being said, there's thin walled soda bottles sitting on the shelf for weeks at the grocery store that haven't rupture on a daily basis, right?

This idea crops up regularly on the forum. The short answer is just get proper pipe.

This could be an alternative: http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/air-tan ... 23098.html

PVC pipe and PET bottles are not the same, it's not only about wall thickness.

I'm not familiar enough (yet :D) with Canadian retailers to be able to help you with this, maybe some other members from the region can chime in.

Find a Home Hardware, Lowes, Home Depot....even that Rona/Totem store SHOULD have pressure rated pvc pipe. Rating will be printed right on the pipe...no guessing.

I've never been in a hardware store that didn't carry rated pvc.

From my limited experience of the country, driving for 5 minutes in any direction should lead you to one of these fine stores :D

Thanks for that PET link Jack, very informative, I was thinking about using a PET bottle again (built a 50 psi marble shooter with 2L), only problem is how to connect that with a 2 inch barrel, along with all the gauge and adapter I need on the chamber.

And following up on Gippeto, I'll go check it out, but my main concern is even if they had pressure rated pipe, would they have pressure rated fittings as well?

Look for thick wall fittings...they WILL be there if the pipe is there.

Fittings will have NSF-PW molded into them somewhere. They match the rating of the pipe they are intended to be used with.

Just came back from Home Depot, couldn't find any in 2 inch, everything was in DWV ~ eck, so I decided to go the PET bottle route instead. I bought a fancy looking Perrier carbonated water in 1 L bottle, going to wrap it all in steel wire, loads of tape around, than another wrap over in poly-cord for good measure. No way that would blow at 70 psi. I'm gonna use a 3/4 female copper adapter to attach the bottle to my ball valve.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll let you know how it goes.

Unreal. I'll admit I couldn't find 2" on Home Depot Canadas website...surprising since I've bought it there.

Anyhow....Find a Home Hardware and give them the item number so they can check stock;

Ah sweet, thanks Gipetto, I'll check this out.

Home Depots I feel have gone to the dogs, it caters more for the suburban yuppies who don't build anything and don't mind being rip off by HD's contractor services. A lot of things have been taken off their shelves, they only had 4 sizes of PVC piping at the store I went to.

DWV ABS in the Schedule 40 thickness should work fine for 70 PSI. I've done some toughness testing on it. See my results in my sig.
