just an idea: what if you made the shells like a piston, and had a burst/puncture disk to pilot them :?:

Adding a burst disk adds complication to the reloading process, which is something you´d want to avoid for shells that have to be produced in quantity - if anything, it should be burst disk only.

I just got an idea from the latest diagram from jack. Would it work if you had a chamber willed with air and a burst disk with a sliding piston on the back. The firing mechanism would push the back forward, decreasing the space, thus creating more pressure and breaking the burst disk? I'll see if I can draw a diagram later.
